With the price of eggs rocketing shoppers in the USA are finding them very hard to find. Some are cracking under the strain of trying to find them. Criminals have scrambled to take advantage of the situation. Some shipments of eggs have been hijacked with gangs taking them to sell on the black market.
There are also reports of rival gangs poaching eggs from other gangs. Some of the more hard-boiled criminals have been trying to steal them from farms and small-holdings.
Dealers on the streets have been involved in back street sales, displacing drug dealers who complain of having been ‘fried’ – the new term for dealers who have been kicked off their turf by the new trade. The experts in this growing phenomen, referred to as eggheads, think it is going to get worse.
Reports are coming in of customers being ripped off with adulterated goods. Eggs that are not all they are cracked up to be. Some can be well past their use by date. Others have found they have been sold duds. Egg shells that have been blown and refilled with jelly.
