Breaking with tradition, the Church of England is taking nominations from the public. Of course Bishop McBishopface is being suggested.
With the Church of England mired in controversy they are reaching out to the British public to try and rebuild trust. The Crown Nomination Commission are inviting public nominations for the role. Previously the selection has been restricted to candidates from the senior clergy. The bonus with this approach is if the next one turns out to be dodgy then it is the public’s fault.
lots of people have suggested Bishop McBishopface.
Has nobody learnt what happens when the public are asked to get involved with naming/nominatin something? Of course lots of people have suggested Bishop McBishopface. Other popular nominations include:
- Father Ted Crilly (he’s fictional and the actor’s dead).
- Father Brown (fictional … again).
- Vicar of Dibley (who’d have guessed it? Fictional).
- Brother Cadfael (fictional – what a suprise!).
- Reverend Lovejoy (cartoon character from The Simpsons).
- Rev Richard Coles – a real person and a real vicar!
The last Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, resigned rom the role in the face of a mounting backlash over inaction relating to the serial abuser John Smyth. To underpin the lack of awareness within the church, his interim replacement was to be the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell. Cottrell is similarly accused over a lack of action regarding a sex abuser in the church. His treatment of the victims of this abuse has also come in for a lot of criticism.
