Meeting of the UN Security Council with Russian and Chinese delegates raising hands to veto ceasefire

Russia and China block US peace motion because war means money

A draft US resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza has been blocked by Russia and China. They are both making money selling weapons in the conflict so they have a vested interest in prolonging the war.

It has taken the USA a long time to get to the stage where they are openly calling for the fighting to stop. The US has previously vetoed three ceasefire proposals, the latest on the 20th February put forward by Algeria.

On Friday they tabled a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire to allow for humanitarian assistance to be delivered. The population of Gaza is suffering from severe starvation due to prolonged lack of food. Both Russia and China vetoed the resolution.

“determine the imperative for an immediate and sustained ceasefire to protect civilians on all sides, allow for the delivery of essential humanitarian assistance, and alleviate humanitarian suffering”

Along with North Korea and Iran, Hamas has been getting weapons from Russia and China. While the first two are not on the UN Security Council, Russia and China are. It is also likely that Russia is happy to have another conflict occurring to distract some of the world’s attention away from the ongoing war in Ukraine.

There is also the wider interest for them to develop good relationships with the Islamic nations by supporting Palestinians.

Algeria also voted against the resolution presumably in retaliation for the USA vetoing their resolution the month before.
