Mildly inconvenienced by 20mph zones to reduce serious accidents? Rishi will stop that. You one of the 10% without a ULEZ compliant car? He’s on your side. Desparate for votes he will embrace any cause as long as it doesn’t involve money.
The motorists friend?
If ever there was s desperate attempt to woo a few voters the announcement that he intends to interfere with local road planning then this is it. This is perfect for him as it is very cheap gesture politics. So cheap it does not cost government a single penny directly. What he will not admit to is that there is a cost to this gesture. On roads where the limit has been reduced to 20mph a recent study has shown that collisions are reduced by 25%, collisions involving vulnerable road users down by 36%, collisions with pedestrians in general down by 63% and collisions resulting in death or serious injury down by 25%. Nearly every collision results in a cost, be it an insurance claim or hospital treatment. Does he really seem like he is being anyone’s friend with this gesture politics?
Of course if he was actually the motorists friend he would reduce duty on fuel, get all the potholes fixed and abolish vehicle excise duty. I call on all the people who think Rishi is the motorist’s friend to hold their breath until this is implemented. Over 90% of cars in London are compliant.
He does keep forgetting that the London ULEZ policy was dictated by the Tory government as a response to the poor air quality in London.
He will do anything for a vote
Annoyed by a neighbour not cutting their hedge? Rishi will come round and trim it.
Neighbour parking on your drive? Rishi will come round and talk to them and bore them into submission.
Got troublesome spiders in your bathroom? Rishi will be round with a glass and a piece of cardboard to deal with it.
Troubled by speeding cars near your children’s school? You obviously have declared war on motorists, even though you probably are one, so won’t receive any help. Shame on you.
