The art of self-delusion, Idaho and maternal mortality

What better way to deal with the issue of maternal mortality than to not even see the problem. Idaho leads the way in not only ignoring a major health issue, but making it disappear.

There is a recognised infant and maternal mortality crisis in the USA which is known to be more severe in Republican run States. There is large amount of evidence that since the striking down of Roe vs Wade most Republican states have been making abortions difficult or illegal. The disregard for women’s reproductive health has led to many healthcare staff leaving those clinics.

In light of the known crisis in maternal mortality in July 2018 Idaho felt compelled to create a Maternal Mortality Review Committee. This did a great job and one of its findings were that between 2018 to 2021 all but one of the maternal deaths were preventable and had issued recommendations for preventing similar deaths in the future. The committee had certainly proved to be worthwhile.

Unfortunately, when it was established the legislators built in a five year lifespan. They did not vote to extend, so in July it ceased to exist.

So no more worthwhile knowledgeable people who would in all likelihood tell them that the situation has probably deteriorated and highlight that the interference of politicians into issues relating to reproductive health are the likely cause.

Problem? There’s no evidence of a problem.
