While rummaging in the loft a young mother found the recorder she used to play as a child. It brought back many happy memories. Her husband can feel his soul withering as she destroys tunes. Their child has disowned her.
While she was looking for the suitcases in the loft Emma Roids (34) came across a box of her school things. As she looked through it she came across her school books, reports, pictures she had drawn and many other mementoes of her school days. Towards the bottom she discovered something that made her heart skip. Her recorder!
Emma remembered many happy hours with the house to herself as she practiced while her parents were at the end of the garden. Even in the rain and snow they would be in the garden leaving her to practice in peace.
Rushing downstairs she waved it excitedly at her husband and telling him all the songs she had learnt to play. Emma took his frozen expression as awe. She then started to play the songs she could remember such as Annie’s Song (John Denver), the theme tune in Balamory and Hey Jude. It was then that her daughter rushed in thinking that some animal was in pain. As she took in the scene her face turned pale.
Please Daddy. Make it stop. I’m in pain.
Emma could tell that her repertoire was not enthralling her audience so she decided to up her game. With a glint in her eyes she brought the recorder up to her lips and launched into Smoke on the Water. She was oblivious to the existential howl of despair building in her husband’s throat. Their daughter rushed over to him and flung her arms around his neck and implored him “Please Daddy. Make it stop. I’m in pain.”. He was unable to move as his will to live had dissolved. He no longer recognised the woman in front of him as his wife. She was an evil demon. The daughter screamed “what are you and what have you done with my mother “.
