Branding image. Lots of images of iPhones receding into the background either side of a central large image of an iPhone. The words Apple Intelligence are overlaid across the phones.

Anger over AI making up news

The revelation that the AI system that generates news for Apple Intelligence has been making up news has caused anger. We are angry. Making up news is OUR job!

The Apple Intelligence system that summarises news stories for some iPhone users confidently informed them that the BBC had reported that Luigi Mangione, the man arrested following the murder of healthcare insurance CEO Brian Thompson in New York, had shot himself. He hadn’t.

The BBC contacted Apple “to raise this concern and fix the problem”, however Apple declined to comment.

Apple Intelligence also made up a story that the New York Times had reported that Benjamin Netanhayu had been arrested. The actual story was that the International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant.

This making up of news stories is totally unacceptable. This undermines the valuable contribution that outlets such as ours makes to the mission of unreliable news and made up facts. This must stop.
