BBC fails – Windows 95 anniversary

The BBC Breakfast show celebrated the anniversary of Windows 95 today, and of course they needed some props in the studio. Can you spot the mistake?

To celebrate 30 years since the launch of Windows 95 BBC Breakfast ran a short piece about those heady days. To decorate the set they even dug out a Windows 95 upgrade disc box ( the upgrade came out about 2 years later), MS-DOS 6.0 install discs box (this came out 2 years earlier) and an Apple Macintosh SE computer – which would never have been able to have Windows installed. It would also have been quite an old computer by the time Windows 95 was released.

Genorous commentators suggested that the BBC was trying to demonstrate impartiality by showing products from rival companies. Some celebrated the fairness. Others slated it as indicative of the both-sidesism that pervades the news coverage. Most commentators were convinced that it was just basic incompetence by a young researcher who was not even born when Windows 2000 was released.

It’s always nice to see that the BBC is consistent with their treatment of facts on complex topics, and fine example of the trustworthiness that that treatment should entail.

I like to think that this was top level trolling by some IT literate researcher 🙂

where the hell is this BBC Verify outfit when you need it!

That’ll silence all the critics that say BBC News is never factually correct.
