MP Scott Benton, bargain basement puppy

The news that a politician has received donations or gifts is nothing new. It is also no surprise that shortly afterwards a politician has spoken out on a debate in support of the group that has been so generous. What can be surprising are the sums involved.

In the recent debates about the changes to the gambling laws MP Scott Benton has been a keen advocate of the gambling industry. He has been at pains to emphasize what fine folk the casinoes are (7th July 2022) employing lots of local people. On the 22nd July he contributed to the debate that we “must not lose sight of the enjoyment that millions of people get from gambling” and argued that “people are sick and tired of being told what they can and cannot do”. He makes gambling sound like a public service. Who’s a good boy? Now roll over.

So what does it take to get this doggy like affection?

In the case of Scott Benton it’s a hospitality package to attend the Brit Awards (£1,164).from the Betting and Gaming Council. Over 2022 he also received hospitality at the England v Czech Republic football game (Gamesys Group), hospitality at Royal Ascot (Betting and Gaming Council) and tickets with hospitality from Entain (owner of Ladbrokes, Coral and PartyPoke) to attend both Wimbledon and another international football match. What a busy summer he had. The value of all these came to £8,659.

This is frankly embarrassing, or great news if you need your own puppy in Westminster and don’t have a big budget.
