Judge Clarence Thomas is the just the latest in the line of judges feeling the cost of living pressures and having to rely on handouts to get by.
There had been a lot of attention and criticism of the Supreme Court justice and his reliance on handouts from billionaire Harlan Crow. It’s not surprising that he is struggling on only $230,000 a year. The extra income from his various properties, $940,000 per year, is necessary to keep his family from destitution.
With a large family having Harlan Crow paying his only child’s school fees is a necessity. There is of course the matter of luxury holidays, trips in a private jet and the tuition fees for his great nephew. How could the good judge be expected to afford all of that.
If the administration pays these people poverty wages what can they expect?
There have been other suffering souls such as Brooklyn judge Victor Barron. He was so mired in debt that he invited a lawyer to donate $250,000. Later lawyer Gary Berenholtz passed him an installment of $18,000. Unfortunately the police who were listening on a wire misinterpreted this as a bribe. The poor judge only had a salary of $136,000.
