Woman reluctant to join Bluesky because no billionaires involved

Even though all her friends have joined she will not sign-up. It just does not seem right that there are no billionaire tech bros involved. Some have even gone to Mastodon!

Carrie Onmywaywardson (Capricorn) spends a lot of time on social media. During bus rides to and from work in Chicago, lunch breaks and evenings. Lately it has become less interesting as all her friends have ditched X and Facebook. Most have moved to Bluesky and sent her links to their new accounts.

She knows that Zuckerberg and Musk are billionaires and feels very comfortable that they can be relied on to keep it free by selling data about her. Carrie does find it creepy and annoying that targeted adverts pop up whenever she has looked at buying anything on another site. Sometimes it seems that if she even talks about something related adverts appear.

Doing her research she was horrified that the CEO of Bluesky was only worth about $5 million. She tried to warn her friends that Bluesky wasn’t owned by a billionaire, but her friends didn’t seem concerned. She is certain they misunderstood her.

Carrie is re-evaluating a couple of her friends who mentioned that they were on something called the Fediverse. It sounded mad. Something called Mastodon which sounds a bit like X but without the toxicity, adverts and algorithms. The unreal thing about it is that nobody owns it and evenly more bizarrely it connects with people in something called the Fediverse.

Surely that couldn’t work. Lots of servers owned by individuals and communities. Even more bizarrely the Fediverse contains systems that share photos like PixelFed, PeerTube for videos and Loops for short video clips like TikTok. As none of them even have millionaires involved they seem subversive and unnatural to Carrie.
