Rwanda is great declare the thousands of Rwandans granted asylum

Despite the UK signing a treaty declaring that Rwanda was a safe place, it seems that many Rwandans were not paying attention. Thousands of Rwandans sought asylum in 2022 from this safe country. Obviously they were doing it just to annoy Rishi Sunak.

The Rwanda Treaty that was passed on 5th December 2023 declared that Rwanda is a safe country for asylum seekers. They were hoping that the treaty fairy would magically make Rwanda a safe country and that everyone would believe them.

It is just totally perverse that 6328 people fled Rwanda in 2022 to seek asylum in various countries. Most of the Rwandan asylum seekers went to countries such as Uganda, Malawi and Canada. A few ended up in the USA (38) and UK.(5). Seems that despite the self-delusion that everyone wants to seek asylum in those countries they are not actually that popular with asylum seekers.

In contrast only 757 people voluntarily applied for asylum in Rwanda. It is notable that Rwanda has declined many asylum applications from people from the LGBTQ community. It would seem reasonable to assume that people seeking asylum to the UK because of homophobic or transphobis persecution would not be welcome in Rwanda.

None of the Rwandans claiming asylum have mentioned how wonderful Rwanda is. So why is it a good idea to send people there when they could claim directly?
