White privileged Tory MP denies existence of white privilege

Tory MP for Chichester and education secretary Gillian Keegan was able to inform the listeners to the LBC Nick Ferrari radio show that she doesn’t see white privilege.

“I mean I don’t think it’s a fact.

“I don’t, for me, think that there is a privilege to being white on its own, no.”

Having grown up in Knowsley and gone to secondary school in Huyton (both with a non -white population of less than 1% in the 80s) she was unlikely to come into contact with many non-white children.

While she was working at Fujitsu as a CEO she should have been aware of an initiative launched in April 2017 to enhance diversity which was acknowledged to be lacking in the company. Perhaps her white privilege prevented her from reading that email.and

Living in Chichester which in the 2011 census had about 95% white population and about 1% black and 3% Asian, it’s possible that throughout her life she never came into contact with a non-white person until Rishi Sunak offered her the education post.

So we have an education secretary pontificating on whether white privileged should be acknowledged in teaching from her comfortable silo of total white privilege.
