Diane Abbott lucky to have lots of white MPs speaking for her

When the issue of the racist comments by a Tory donor came up in Prime Minister’s questions Abbott was saved the effort of having to respond. While the comments were aimed at her, lots of white MPs had their opinions aired on her behalf.

Having suffered a personal, misogynistic and racist attack from Tory donor Frank Hester which included a suggestion of violence (“should be shot”), there was obviously a lot to be said. Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, despite Abbott standing up over 40 times to be chosen to speak, decided not to select her.

Instead a series of white MPs spoke, although most seemed to be focused on embarrassing Sunak into returning the donation and little interest in the misogyny and racism.

Hester’s meaningless apology

“want to hate all black women”

Rishi Sunak is eager to see Frank Hester’s apology as an end to the matter and wants the conversation to move on from the sticky question of whether the Tories should keep the lovely pile of £10 million donated.

Sunak obviously does not understand the value of a meaningless apology as Hester has gone on to say that it “had nothing to do with her gender nor colour of skin”. Considering the comment he made included the words ‘black’ and ‘women’ it had everything to do with gender and skin colour.
