For those unfamiliar with the 1921 Tulsa race massacre briefly, the black population had established a prosperous and thriving community in the Tulsa area of Greenwood. Following a minor alleged incident between a black man and a white woman (charges dismissed) in May 1921, he was taken into custody. Following inflammatory comments in local press there was a confrontation between a small group of blacks and large, armed white group. The blacks withdrew to Greenwood when shots were fired. The following day large groups of whites attacked Greenwood. After the rioting and looting had abated up to 300 were dead, 800 injured and, 35 city blocks burnt to the ground.
