Following the renaming of Big Ben, is London ready for another major attraction to be renamed? Now that Big Ben is ‘Massive Mohammed’, plans are in place for renaming HMS Belfast. Cultural vandalism?
While the renaming of Big Ben is not without its critics, many feel that Massive Mo, as it has come to be known, celebrates Britain’s increasing diversity.
Can the same be said for HMS Belfast? The owners of this veteran Cruiser from WW II (Imperial War Museums) announced that they had come under pressure to increase public engagement with their activities. One of the suggestions was that people could get involved with renaming HMS Belfast.
Having witnessed what had happened when the British public get involved with naming boats, the organisers decided to just poll visitors to HMS Belfast. They assumed they would take it seriously.
They were wrong. In a special naming ceremony in a few weeks the ship will officially be named Boaty McBoatface. The public finally has its way.
