A long line of wind turbines in Oaxaca area of Mexico

Mexico to build wind turbines along border to annoy Trump

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum has announced the plan to wind up Trump. They hope to sell lots of electricity into the USA

The proposal to create a line of wind turbines along the Mexico-US border has been made to annoy Trump who is obsessed with fossil fuels. Mexico currently gets 7% of it’s electricity from wind and plans to increase this substantially along with solar power generation.

Scheinbaum’s background as a climate scientist informs her commitment to prioritise sustainable energy for Mexico. In addition her love of Mexican culture and traditions has driven policies that retain significant investments in traditional energy sources.

By contrast Trump’s background as a failed casino owner, fraudster and apparently a paedophile (judging by the contested birthday message to Epstein, his regular travels to Epstein island and his failure to release the Epstein files) underpins his ignorance of the large sustainable energy businesses in his own country. The US sustainable energy sector that grew under Biden has a large economic impact and employs large numbers of people. Recent figures show that 42% of the jobs in the energy sector are linked to renewable energy.

Mexico is already connected to the Western Interconnect system that distributes electricity along the western part of the USA and into Canada, and as far east as the Great Plains. Of the 810 GWh going in to the Western Interconnect coal powered generation only contributes 22 GW while solar and wind add 71 GW (2023 figures). WECC, who manage the Western Interconnect, plan to retire more coal and gas powered stations with up.to 85% of the new capacity being from renewable sources as a priority. Additional wind turbines in Mexico can make an important contribution to this goal.
