Luckily there is a copy of the report that most domestic terrorism incidents are by white supremacists just-in-case the DoJ lose their’s. Oops.
A detailed analysis of domestic terrorism in the US was carried out by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and published in January 2024. The report (What NIJ Research Tells Us About Domestic Terrorism) contained some very stark analysis including the majority of attacks being attacks being committed by far-right extremists.
Militant, nationalistic, white supremacist violent extremism has increased in the United States. In fact, the number of far-right attacks continues to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism. Since 1990, far-right extremists have committed far more ideologically motivated homicides than far-left or radical Islamist extremists, including 227 events that took more than 520 lives. In this same period, far-left extremists committed 42 ideologically motivated attacks that took 78 lives.
The National Institute of Justice, which is a part of the Department of Justice, used to have the report at https://nij.ojp.gov/topics/articles/what-nij-research-tells-us-about-domestic-terrorism. Unfortunately this page has been removed.
By the wonders of the internet a copy of this report has been saved at https://archive.is/1t1rm. Should this archived page go ‘missing’ a PDF of it has been saved. Just get in touch for a copy.
A reminder of this analysis which highlights that far-right activists are more likely to commit murder comes at an interesting moment, with the murder of Charlie Kirk. The likely perpetrator, Tyler Robinson, does not seem to fit neatly into either demographic. While right wing voices were swift to declare that leftists had declared ‘war’, Robinson does not fit neatly into their narrative.
