Having worked from home since starting work in 2020, Julie Noted (23) is angry that she was told to start working in the company office. She didn’t even know they had office
The shock of having to work in an office has been too much for one young Gen S worker. “I’m used to getting up at 8:55 switching on the computer, logging in then going for breakfast”. The office conditions have left her very unhappy. With no sofa to lounge on while she has breakfastand no shower for her mid-morning hair wash. “I’ve tried washing my hair in the sink but then couldn’t find the hair dryer. I tried asking the people in the office where it was but they looked at me like I was on drugs”.
Adjusting to actually starting work at 9 rather than going for breakfast has been difficult. It has also affected her health. She used to go to the gym a few afternoons a week when it is quieter. “I could go at night but it’s so crowded and to be honest I’m too tired”.
“I didn’t know that wearing a onesie to work was not acceptable”. About her first meeting she comments “I haven’t worn trousers to a meeting ever. No one can tell on a Zoom call”. She was horrified to be called to a meeting and everybody was wearing trousers except her. “It was mortifying”.
