Tired of cheap dubious attack politics? Hoping for a better standard of political discourse for the coming election? Labour already aiming to deliver disappointment, and raise the spectre of Labour’s links to the Paedophile Information Exchange.
The issue of the detection of sexual exploitation of children, prosecution and conviction is complex. Reducing it to a meme blaming Rishi Sunak personally both dimishes the seriousness of paedophilia, and undermines the efforts of those trying to tackle this heinous crime.
Rishi Sunak became an MP in 2015 and became prime minister six months ago. Bit of a stretch to hold him personally responsible. However, someone who has more direct responsibility for the sentencing paedophiles over the past few years is Keir Starmer. As part of his role as former Director of Public Prosecutions, was part of the panel that determined the sentencing guidelines currently being used.
This of course does allow people to throw about the accusations that Keir Starmer did not prosecute the Rochdale grooming gang involved in the sexual exploitation of young girls. While he was not responsible for the decision not to prosecute, once people start throwing shallow accusations about it is difficult to predict what is going to stick, and where.
Of course Labour have skeletons in their cupboard. In the 1970s and 1980s called the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE) was openly lobbying for the removal of the age of consent. PIE became part of the the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) which had Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman as legal advisor and her husband Jack Dromey (another senior Labour figure) as an NCCL committee member. In December 1975 Keith Hose, chairman of PIE, wrote to Patricia Hewitt (general secretary of NCCL and later a Labour health secretary) asking her to consider PIE’s views in its policy on ages of consent. The letter was on PIE notepaper which features a logo of two bare-legged children sitting on a rock. Hewitt wrote back saying: “We have found your evidence … most helpful and I think it has certainly been taken into account by the people preparing our evidence.”. There are a catalogue of murky connections between this abhorrent organisation and it’s members with the Labour party up to 2015.
Only an imbecile would start rattling this tree, and whoever in the Labour party thought this was a good idea should be kept away from any computers in future.
