Would black people only be famous for sport and entertainment?

Nathan Cofnas is a Cambridge philosopher who styles himself as a ‘Race Realist”. He has stated that in a true meritocracy Blacks would disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment. Only in the USA.

Should anyone take Cofnas seriously? His Xcretions and blog comments are littered with references to boomers, wokeness and Jews. He appears to mostly interested in performative outrage and making provocative comments to attract attention. He attempts to posit white privilege as a philosophical certainty. Black people should stick to sports and rapping.

He is obviously ignorant of the systemic bias against black people trying to gain education and enter academia through out US history. Meritocracy is theoretically a good thing, but is it fair when a large percentage of the community is systematically disadvantaged by white people protecting their privilege? They are happy to take black people’s taxes but not so keen that they get educational support. A good example of the systemic discrimination in the USA is the promise of university education to all WWII veterans as long as they were white.

Eminent academic black people

Strangely none of these were interested in sports and entertainment. Some are well known, others should be better known and celebrated. One thing they all have in common is that none of them were involved in the US education or university system. The issue is not that black people can’t make an impact in the world of academia, it is systemic discrimination in the US education and academic system that holds many back.

From the impressive list of honours bestowed on this Trinidad born powerhouse of science it is obvious that he made an impact. University in Ireland and then moving around Europe ending up at UCL to do his PhD. He specialised in reproductive physiology and made many major contributions to the understanding of reproduction in many species. He was the first person from the West Indies to be made a Fellow of the Royal Society. Wikipedia

Dr Charlene Dambire

Born in Zimbabwe she is a young postdoctoral research fellow in plant sciences. She has two Nature papers to her name and is working to understand the genes involved in seed germination with an eye to plant adaptation in a changing climate. She is one of many black scientists, engineers and thinkers making up the next wave of talent who will be making a real contribution.

There are many, many other brilliant black scientists all over the world making significant contributions to science. It is rather reductive of small minded people like Cofnas just to make it a conversation about black people. Every ethnicity produces people of talent who contribute to their respective fields.

The real question is, what talent and ability has Cofnas got that has added to the human condition? Apart from a whiny blog and a few opinion piece articles, not a lot. He will probably carry on writing pithy little articles and sharing his ignorance in think tanks. He will never make a worthwhile contribution such as those from the scientist above.
