WWII Battle of Britain contrails

RAF squadron still heralded as contrail champions

During World War II brave squadrons of fighter pilots repelled German air force attacks over London. In the air battles the Spitfires and Hurricanes created some impressive CONTRAILS when the humidity conditions were just right at lower altitudes.

The density and complexity of the trails are ever likely to be replicated.

Why does weather manipulation by commercial airline ‘chemtrails’ make no sense?

The basic idea of cloud seeding is to introduce nucleation material (silver iodide crystals) into humid air to encourage the formation of water droplets leading to rain. This is called cloud seeding. The part of the atmosphere which has the best conditions for water droplets is at cloud height, hence the presence of clouds. Rain clouds (nimbus) tend to form at 500 to 5500m. Commercial airlines tend to fly at 9000 to 12000m, way above the rain cloud height so would be no use for cloud seeding. Dropping the silver iodide from a higher altitude for it to drift down would be nonsense as it would become too dispersed to be effective.

Observation bias

The majority of people with phone cameras live in urban places so the likelihood of a picture of contrails is higher. This gives the illusion that there are lots of contrails over urban areas. Anyone carrying out cloud seeding would do it over agricultural areas where water would be needed.
