The collision of a buik fuel tanker and a container ship in the North Sea. Pollution can be seen on the surface

North Sea collision; good news for coastal waters

The collision has caused a spillage of fuel and other pollutants, but there is an upside due to the sewage running into the sea.

When the container ship MV Solong collided with the anchored oil tanker MV Stena Immaculate on 11th March both ships caught fire. The crews were evacuated and 36 people have been taken to Hull. Most said they would have preferred to go to France because, well, Hull.

There were concerns about pollution from the collision reaching the East Yorkshire coast, however these concerns have proved to be baseless. The volume of sewage being pumped into rivers and directly into the sea is pushing the pollution away from the coast. There is also evidence that the sewage is neutralising the pollution from the ships.
