So many languages assign genders to words, but a lot of them make no sense. With male genders assigned to words that have a clear female association, how can French, German and Italian women ever escape the yoke of male dominance?
Puzzlingly, the French word for ovary, ovaire, is masculine! The French word for women’s breasts, sein, is masculine while bizarrely the word for men’s breasts, poitrine, is feminine. How does that make any sense?
Leximadness isn’t restricted to the French. The German’s also have a word for ovary, eierstock, and guess what gender it has been assigned? Yep. Masculine. The German word for bra, büstenhalter, is again masculine. How did this craziness ever be allowed to happen? Is it all about male ownership? Breasts? Yep they’re mine. All mine. All the sexy bits belong to blokes.
That is why English is a superior language when it comes to equality. No noun gendering. In reality quite a few languages don’t have noun genders such as Finnish, Hungarian, Estonian, Turkish, Indonesian and Vietnamese. To be honest none of those are likely to suddenly gain prominence.
To celebrate International Women’s Day we are starting a campaign to make Europe drop all their misogynistic languages and adopt English. The Europeans have already made a good start. With a bit more effort they can achieve full adoption of English.
