In a tense and well attended meeting the commissioners removed the libraries closure item from the agenda, but feelings are still running high.
The closure of the librares was threatened as a tantrum response to the order to return books to the shelves. At a tense public meeting in the Llano County Sheriff’s office last night the. Commissioners heard some opposing members read explicit content from the books in question. That’s a big part of this fallout. Those who wanted the library system closed said they believe certain materials shouldn’t be accessible to children. The crux is that they have a very narrow view of what is acceptable.
“The book banning needs to be done. Those books need to be burnt. I don’t agree with them not closing the library,” said Barbara Light, who is in favour of closing the libraries.
Judge Cunningham expressed concern over the ongoing lawsuit as it’s costing the county thousands of dollars. If the litigation continues, it will be impossible for the county to operate its library system. The present cost of the lawsuit is more than $100,000. It assumed that the book burning, library closing zealots will continue litigating to ensure that the library service becomes to expensive to remain open.
