The remake of the 2011 original was released today. The main star, Charles Windsor, has none of the vulnerable charm of Colin Firth.
Released today to replicate the Christmas broadcast that was the climax of the original film, it has none of the charm and pathos of the original. In a twist, the director has re-framed it as a reality event. This was a mistake as it removed the opportunity for additional characters to reflect what it takes to make the speech happen.
On the plus side, this remake did reflect current concerns such as the cost of living crisis, conflict around the world, famine and people struggling to pay their bills. Perhaps this was the point of the remake, but it was not enough to make it shine compared the Colin Firth version.
