Painting of Frida Kahlo - picture of a woman with joining eyebrows and a subtle hint of hair above her mouth. She has dark hair and an elaborate hair decoration with white butterflies. There is a black cat on one shoulder and a small dark monkey on the other shoulder. The background is of large leafed jungle plants.

Innovators – Frida Kahlo

The Mexican painter was an innovator for most of her life. Known for her uncompromising approach to her self-portraits and her life. She is also famous for inventing the monobrow.

Kahlo was a unique woman in every respect. The Mexican artist (1907-1954) is known for her defiant self-fashioning which seems to resonate perfectly with the current moment. Her distinctive beauty was entirely her own, untamed by traditional ideals of femininity, or conventional notions of sexual attractiveness.

Her sense of style, was entirely self-created. She rejected the fashions of the time and asserted her cultural identity by dressing in the colourful traditional style of Mexico’s Tehuana women. Added to this she invented the distinctive monobrow which has since become popular.
