Killer robots approved: what could possibly go wrong?

The San Francisco police have approved the deployment of robots armed with explosives. Omni Consumer Products President, Dick Jones, hailed this as an exciting development. “This is a win for law enforcement and a win for business. What could possibly go wrong”, he said as he announced plans for the ED-209 system.

A police spokesman has said “robots could potentially be equipped with explosive charges to breach fortified structures containing violent, armed, or dangerous subjects”. The robots could be used to “incapacitate, or disorient violent, armed, or dangerous suspects who pose a risk of loss of life”.

Any similarity to the plot of the 1987 film RoboCop was denied by Dick Jones. “That was set in Detroit and this is San Francisco. Any similarity is nonsense”.

UPDATE the San Francisco police department have now decided to reverse this decision 7th December 2022
