Paula Vennells has announced that she will return her CBE after finally realising she is evil. Surprisingly she had not comprehended the carnage her actions had wrought on hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters until ITV made a drama about it. The court cases were just not as convincing.
The long running saga of over 900 sub-postmasters who were accused and convicted of theft from the Post Office on the basis of evidence from the flawed Horizon system was eventually exposed. In 2019 when
Between 1999 and 2015 the Post Office relentlessly pursued these sub-postmasters through the courts and perpetrated the largest miscarriage of justice in UK legal history. Hundreds of sub-postmasters ended up with criminal records. Various penalties were given such as having to do community service, wear electronic tags and some being jailed. Many were left struggling financially or even bankrupt following convictions. Vennells was CEO of the Post Office during this period.
Paula Vennells didn’t recognise that she had perpetrated corporate evil when the first cases were overturned in court in 2019. She and the Post Office continued to fight and went to appeal which was denied in 2021. She did this knowing the Horizon system was faulty. Even after this failed appeal Vennells and the Post Office continued to fight subsequent cases. She still didn’t realise she is a scumbag.

Vennells was awarded a CBE in the 2019 New Year’s honours, after the first convictions were over turned. It obviously didn’t occur to her then or since that she was evil and undeserving of a CBE.
Following the high profile ITV drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office that started on 1st January, she has suddenly developed self awareness and a conscience. It wasn’t until I saw it laid out in a drama that I realised how evil I had been. It’s one thing to have court judgements but when you have a drama with Tony Jones in it then you realise it is serious. Hopefully Mr. Bates will be able to make up for the losses with a bit of metal detecting as he did in The Dectectorists.
She has declared she will return her CBE and hopes everyone is happy with this act of contrition. “Hopefully that will draw a line under the saga and everyone is now happy”.
